HEINEKEN LAGOS FASHION WEEK 2019 LADE IBIKUNLE AT LAGOS FASHION WEEK

Heineken Lagos Fashion Week 2019 | My Honest Opinion!

16:00Lade Ibikunle

Unlike previous years, this year, I took Heineken Lagos fashion week very seriously. Got my outfits for the 3 days (4 days actually but the 1st day was a private gathering of the creme de la creme of which I can only aspire to be as LFW did not invite me), registered for press pass early (which I got, thank God), and booked an hotel to stay in for the period (which ran up my budget but thankfully, I Sarah of  Princessaudu.com agreed to be roommates with me and we shared the cost).
Yes, we reached out to a couple of hotels and hotel booking agencies but they turned us down. A story for another day.

So I will be talking about the just concluded Lagos fashion week from five points which are; location, runway, time, designers and general thoughts. For context, I'll suggest you read last year's post here.

Let's get into this, shall we?

LOCATION
I personally prefer this location to the last. There was enough space for street-style slay, the venue was well-designed and the ambiance felt nice. It was a total transformation of the balmoral hall and for that, I give LFW kudos!!!
RUNWAY
Did LFW read my post last year where I said I didn't like the black runway? I ask because the white runway is back and I could not be happier. The design of the set was so beautiful. They even had this back door opening thing right on the runway for extra 'efizy'. The sound was also great! I know this because when Mai Atafo ATAFO had a live choir singing to his line, they sounded beautiful, the voices and the instruments were well mixed. Overall, the hall/runway experience was very nice.

TIME
Well, the shows were slated for 5pm for the 3 days but the did not start till about 7pm. This is an improvement from last year's which started at 9pm and to be honest, they did end the shows when they said they would which was 10pm. I guess the 2-hour difference is to accommodate our 'Nigerian Time'.

DESIGNERS
The designers really did their best but the ones that did it for me in no particular order are ATAFO, AWA MEITE, HOUSE OF KAYA (loved their styling), EJIRO, EMMY KASBIT, UGO MONYE, DZYN and CYNTHIA ABILA.

GENERAL THOUGHTS
I loved fashion week this year, to be honest. We still had one or two bad shoes worn by models, but it was greatly improved upon from last year. We all got goody bags from darling on the second day and that was a nice surprise. Another great thing was that there was free wifi on days 3 & 4 which was amazing. This afforded people the ability to go live on social media and that is what we want. The world needs to see this amazing thing happening in Nigeria. We can only get better from here and I look forward to more amazing LFWs. Kudos to the team of makeup artists, stylists, camera crew, operators, interns, etc. You all did amazing!!!
I made new friends, met old acquaintances and bonded over shared passion. that was my highlight.
