10:29Lade Ibikunle
Hey lovely people! welcome to my little space on the internet. How have you all been doing? Today's post will be somewhat different because not everytime slay, sometimes serious talk. So we will be talking about boobs as it relates to Breast cancer and from the pictures, you know this is a blogger collaboration! Massive shoutout to Larisa for initiating the Nigerian Bloggers For Breast Cancer Campaign.
The funny thing is that that my final year project was centered around Breast cancer "The Use of Social Media In Breast cancer Awareness" and I was a Mass Communications student with no relation whatsoever with medicine and lets also not forget that social media at at about 4 years ago had not gained so much ground as it does now. My project supervisor thought I was crazy. Lade, he said, of all the topics to do a project on eg A comprehensive appraisal of Nigerian Media, The Role of mass media in Conducting Elections and many more like that, you bring me Breast cancer and Social Media, Is social media even journalism?. Long story short, I convinced him and he let me roll with my topic.
Here I am 4 years down the line, using my Social platform to speak about Breast Cancer! My lecturer was wrong init😀?Some Info about Breast Cancer Shall We?
Breast cancer is a malignant (cancerous) growth that begins in the tissues of the breast. It is the most common cancer in women, but it can also appear in men. Breast cancer in Nigeria results in over 400,000 annual deaths and about 4.4 million women living with the disease (who would have thought?)
Risk Factors
- Having a breast (including man boobs).
- Aging.
- Genetic history.
- Being overweight.
- Using hormone replacement therapy.
- Taking birth control pills.
- Alcohol intake.
- Late child bearing.
Highly Overlooked Signs and Symptoms
- Breast Lump
- Abnormal change in size or shape of the breast
- Breast discharge from the nipple
Preventive measures
- Maintain a healthy weight,
- Regular exercise (message to me in particular),
- Limit alcohol intake and avoid smoking as much as you can (even second -hand smoke).
- Avoiding hormone replacement therapy after menopause is also important.
- Breast Screening (Mammogram)
- Breast Self Examination” (BSE). Watch Video below
The problem here in Nigeria is that most of the diagnosis happens late hence the rapidly increasing number of deaths but we can put a stop to this with early detection. Breast cancer can indeed be managed and you live a health, bubbly life as a Breast cancer patient! And please feel free to get information from the internet. There are tons and tons of useful info at your fingertips curated just for you so use it!
